The Best Air Fryers in 2022 (No. 1 Is My Favorite)

Disclaimer: Without conscious bias, we independently research, test, and recommend the best products; you can learn more about our review process here. We may receive commissions on purchases made from our chosen links.

Air fryers are no longer just a trend, they’ve quickly become a kitchen staple. They really became popular because of their compact shapes, minimal cleaning requirements and multi functions. Some can very well replace toaster ovens, pressure cookers, toasters and even crockpots.

If there’s one thing all air fryers are known for it’s using less oil than traditional methods. I was hooked with my first air fryer because it was healthier for making foods I loved. I no longer had to drain excess oil from fried foods and clean up was a whole lot easier. That being said, my first air fryer was a long time ago and after trying many of them, I can attest that they are not created equal. In this article, I will review the best air fryers in 2022. Here’s what I’ll cover:

  • How air fryers work.
  • How to use an air fryer.
  • Types of air fryers
  • Cooking tests
  • Amazon reviews analysis
  • Downsides

All of the above will be discussed in detail so keep reading to find out more.

Quick List of the Best Air Fryers

We have tested five of the nineteen air fryers on this list in our in-home kitchen. The air fryers we tested include:

Other air fryers reviewed for which we have relied mainly on amazon reviews, consumers experience and feedback :

Why you should trust us.

Every product that we investigate is put through rigorous testing that can last for several days, weeks, or even months. Before making a decision about whether or not to purchase a product, we acknowledge that consumers have the right to be informed of everything there is to know about that product. We consult professionals in the field and manufacturers, but the most important thing is that we put the products through our own rigorous testing.

In addition to being a home cook, I have evaluated a number of different kitchen appliances over the course of many years. This isn’t my first rodeo; I have tested many other air fryers and I am fully aware of what criteria to consider in order to determine which is best. For the purpose of the test, I selected particular foods in order to obtain the most reliable data. Rest assured, I will provide the most accurate review based on all these factors.

How air fryers work and what are the types of air fryers.

Regarding how food is cooked, most air fryers operate similarly. Each air fryer features a heating mechanism that, in essence, simulates deep frying, although more quickly and with less oil. The same heating process works for other air fryer functions such as roasting, pressure cooking and steaming. Below is a generic description of how to use an air fryer but first, some best practices.

  • Air fryers have different wattage and voltage depending on the size. Always read through the specifications of your air fryer to prevent damage.
  • The air fryer unit gets very hot, so make sure you’re using it on a heat-resistant surface. Keep it at least a few inches away from other appliances or kitchen items. Because hot air is emitted from the vent, it can’t be covered or placed near plastic items.
  • Whatever you’re cooking, whether it is fries, vegetables, or chicken, keep everything in a single layer in the basket; otherwise, the food will steam instead of crisp up.
  • While cooking, remove and shake the basket at least once. This will assist the air fryer in evenly cooking smaller items that are difficult to turn individually, such as fries, and tater tots. (Not all air fryers require shaking).
  • When you cook something fatty like bacon or burger patties in your air fryer, the grease that drips into the drawer may get too hot and make smoke. To avoid this, put about 2 tablespoons of water in the drawer before you start cooking. This works well for things like burger patties, but it can make bacon a little less crispy, so you can also put a slice of bread in the drawer to soak up any grease.

How to use an air fryer.

Air fryers must be preheated like ovens. Don’t skip this step, no matter your model. You can heat the air fryer basket within it. Check the recipe and air fryer temperature. Small to medium air fryers heat about 2-3 minutes. Larger models take 5 minutes. I personally prefer air fryers that preheat automatically and we will get into that later.

Once your air fryer is hot, add the food, set the timer, and enjoy. It’s that simple. Even though most air fryer manufacturers say otherwise, most air fryers aren’t dishwasher-safe. Cool your air fryer before cleaning it to avoid burns. Unclean air fryers can cause kitchen fires so proper maintenance is key to extending its life.

What We Tested and How We Tested

I tested five top reviewed air fryers from the most prominent brands on the market; Ninja Foodi, Gourmia, Instant Pot, Cosori and the Instant Vortex. In each air fryer, I used vegetables (zucchini, carrots, and eggplant, white sandwich bread, chicken legs and frozen fries.

While all air fryers performed well, the Cosori Max XL did come out on as the winner.

Amazon reviewers raved about Cosori’s cooking performance, and my own testing proved true. The air fryer actually heated to 400 degrees, unlike others. The chicken legs were perfectly crisp on the outside and juicy inside, the fries were also better when compared to the other four air fryers.

I describe the tests in detail below so keep reading to find out more!

With thousands of excellent ratings across the brand’s line of fryers, the Cosori Air Fryer is an Amazon favorite. For its air fryers, the company has won numerous awards and is currently ranked number one on Amazon in the air fryer category.

Overview:

Listed as an Amazon bestseller, it’s no surprise that the Cosori fryer is our top pick. The model boasts a capacity of 5.8 quarts. With the ability to fit a 6-pound chicken and comfortably serve a family of 3-5 people. All pros and novices will find the interface very user-friendly.

That said, the Cosori Air Fryer has a fingerprint-resistant LED digital touchscreen with 11 pre-programmed settings for different selections of meats, seafood, carbs, and dessert. So after opening the box, you’re one tap away from cooking some recipes from the easy read cookbook included in the box.

Alexa will hear you just fine while the air fryer is running. You’ll also enjoy frying on a crowded countertop because it doesn’t spit or get too hot. When done, leave the no effort cleaning to the dishwasher.

Its award-winning angular design is one you wouldn’t dream of hiding in a cupboard and is quite the conversation starter. The bottom line is this beauty is an affordable must-have. If you buy this one, you’ll join a community of 4,680 and counting happy Cosoari Air Fryer owners who gave the appliance five stars.

Chicken Wings

This test revealed what might be the crispest and juiciest I’ve seen chicken wings from an air fryer, and I’ve tried countless others! Other air fryers I tried didn’t exactly get to 400 degrees but this model certainly did.

Frozen fries

Frozen fries didn’t came out as expected, they were not evenly cooked and soggy.

White sandwich bread

The toast turned out great but I would recommend choosing the time and temperature on your own instead of using pre-sets for this. You have to remember that the air fryer is using circulated hot air to cook to get the desired crust.

Vegetables (carrots, Zucchini, eggplant)

My roasted vegetables were perfectly cooked and a little crisp on the outside. The colour and flavour was also great.

Key Performance Factors Analysis

Noise

This model is very loud. There’s no going around it. Out of all the models I reviewed this is definitely the loudest.

Control

The Cosori is controlled electronically, and it comes with a variety of pre-sets for commonly prepared dishes.

Cooking

When using the Cosori air fryer Max XL, your food will cook evenly thanks to the device’s 360-degree revolving basket. It eliminates the need for trial-and-error in the kitchen thanks to its 13 preset cooking modes, (very accurate by the way) each of which regulates the oven’s temperature and cooking time to optimal levels for the ingredient being prepared. I was thoroughly impressed that it aced all the cooking tests.

Cleaning

What I like best about clean-up is how simple it is to clean the air fryer itself. Everything just falls right off. I barely scrubbed it, and each time it was clean. I know it says dishwasher safe, but I just wash it in the sink because nothing ever gets dried on and attached to it.

Downsides during cooking

It may take a few days to get used to the temp/time button because you must change between them. I’m still guilty of pressing the wrong button now and then.

From just the numbers alone you can tell that there’s more than hype around this air fryer. At 83 percent, it has the best percentage of 5 star reviews compared to the other air fryers. That’s a total of 92, 367 happy consumers who have bought this product. After analysing over 2000 reviews that were rated 1 star (including picture and video evidence) I realised that a most of the models that they purchased has manufacturer defects like the handle coming broken. Others said their models stopped in the middle of the first use and this could be for a number of reasons including that the wrong voltage was used.

Gourmia 6 Quart Digital Air Fryer GAF698

You don’t have to spend a small fortune on an air fryer oven in order to have one of decent quality. The Gourmia was quite inexpensive despite scoring highly in most of our tests.

Chicken Legs

Chicken legs took longer than the recommended time but I was determines to have edible food so I removed the air fryer basket after 15 minutes and turned the legs before continuing for another 15 minutes.

Frozen Fries

The Gourmia didn’t perform so well with this cooking test. The recommended cooking time is 15 minutes for frozen fries but after taking them out, the fries were still a bit soggy and the colour just wasn’t up to par. In terms of taste, it didn’t taste anything like deep fried fries. The texture was way off .

White Sandwich Bread

I air fried the white sandwich bread at 400 degrees F for 4 minutes and I have to say I was not disappointed. This air fryer is a basket type so it had a better capacity and more even heating than air fryers of other shapes. The bread wasn’t toasted to my liking but it was decent enough, with only a few hot spots.

Vegetables

This air fryer gets hot really fast. I used the vegetables function to see the results on the zucchini, carrots and eggplant. I thought they would have more of a crisp but overall it was also a decent test.

Key Performance Factors Analysis

Noise

The Gourmia has a dBA reading of 60 when in operation, which is slightly louder than the typical air fryer and is around the volume of a humming air conditioner.

Control

The bottom plastic housing of the sides got up to 157°F while cooking, which is dangerously hot to the touch. Even if the air fryer’s controls and handles stay at room temperature, you shouldn’t leave young children in its vicinity. I would be wary about putting anything plastic in close proximity to it because of how hot it gets.

Cooking

This model is not as efficient as some of the other pricier and sturdier air fryers but it did do a good job in most of the cooking tests. It heats fast so I recommend checking food occasionally while using the presets.

Cleaning

The non-stick coating on both the basket and the rack makes clean-up a breeze whether you want to wash the items by hand or use the dishwasher’s top rack.

Noise demonstration:

Downside detected during testing.

One minor flaw with this equipment is its badly designed frame. The basket didn’t fit into the oven as flush as I’d like, which could cause problems in the long run, though it didn’t impact my usage of it in any way. The basket may no longer fit and will be impossible to close correctly with time. In my Amazon reviews research, a lot of purchasers did say the same about their models.

Overall, this Gourmia model is rated 4.6 out of 5 stars. A whopping 79 percent of purchasers, amounting to 565, loved their unit and that mostly good things to say about it. The negative global ratings amounted to 61 which is 5 percent for 1 star reviews and 1 percent for 2 stars.

The main pain points were from purchasers who bought refurbished models that either arrived dented or still had food stuck to them. Other complaints were that the frame of the air fryer was thin and did not last for years. Most agreed that the air fryer was decent and you were getting what you paid for. For an air fryer that costs $79, I also think it’s decent for the price and will work for one or two people who aren’t expecting to use it for a wide variety of items.

NINJA OP301 Foodi 9-in-1

Specifications :

  • Item Dimensions LxWxH : 17.1 x 19.1 x 18.8 inches
  • Material : Plastic, Metal, Rubber
  • Operation Mode : Automatic

In our comparison of the best air fryers, the Ninja multi-cooker was by far the largest and heaviest machine. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given what this beast of a machine is capable of.

Overview:

The price has fans excited to own the Ninja Air Fryer. But that’s not all. It is very competitive in the category of taste and digital features. The crunch of its French fries didn’t come close to an oil fryer, but breadcrumbed and battered chicken results are on par with that of recipes fried in a skillet.

On the exterior are digital controls to dehydrate, reheat, and roast with a few other complicated programmings you’ll master after a couple of uses. The nonstick coated interior is dishwasher friendly. The bottom line is the Ninja is very versatile, given its small size and affordable price point that rivals the Cosori and Phillip fryer.

Chicken Legs and wings

I cooked the chicken legs in the pressure cooker for 25 minutes (minus the amount of time it took for the pressure to build). After that, I let it air fry for another 15 minutes. Although the handbook recommends draining the pressure cooking liquid from the bottom of the pot for maximum results, the skin was crackly crisp even without it.

Frozen Fries

I was happy with both the results of this cooking test and that I didn’t have to shake the basket to ensure even cooking. The fries were perfect browned and crisp but the taste just didn’t do it for me. I would definitely be able to tell the difference between the batch I did and some deep fried fries. I wasn’t happy that for such a huge unit, the air fryer basket could only hold 2 pounds of fries without it being overcrowded.

White Sandwich Bread

The bread slices were too crisp, too fast but with some adjustment to the timing and temperature I’m sure the air fryer would perform better.

Vegetables

The vegetables came out great, maybe a little soggy after the pressure cooking but the vegetables function itself was perfect. I air fried them for a few minutes after and they had a good crisp to them.

Key Performance Factors Analysis

Noise

I noticed that using the Foodi to air fry was noisier than using the pressure-cook feature. The noise level might be excessive in a tiny kitchen but it not exhaust fan loud.

Beeping noises are also tolerable. It does not beep constantly, merely when you lift the lid or hit the function buttons. When you first start using the Foodi, don’t be alarmed if the lid makes a horrible creaking noise. I did some research and turns out it’s completely fine for the first couple times.

Control

The Foodi includes a nice display window that shows you what’s cooking, how much time is remaining, and when to close the lid. While the Foodi is pressurizing, blue lights on the display rotate in a square, and they stop circling once it has attained pressure.

Cooking

It performed great in the cooking tests but it wouldn’t work for large portions. I discovered that a 5.5-pound chicken could fit in the air fryer basket, but the legs would protrude somewhat. This indicates that the basket is too small for larger chickens.

Cleaning

The air fryer basket’s legs have several crevices that are tough to clean. This, along with the model’s total weight, are disadvantages to acquiring it.

Downsides during cooking

While utilizing the pressure cooking lid, there must be enough room for the crisping lid to be open. You can’t cook with the Foodi on a counter under your cabinets because of the attached air fryer lid. Because the Foodi electrical chord is only 33 inches long, you’ll need to use it near an outlet. (The instructions state that an extension cord should not be used.) The Foodi’s pressure release valve is short and a little more difficult to use than the Instant Pot’s without coming into contact with the steel.

The 5 star ratings make up 85 percent of the overall score and a lot of those purchasers say they ditched other brands for the Ninja Foodi. I can relate with some reviews that were especially impressed with the pressure cooking function. The 1 star reviews make up only 5 percent of the overall reviews and most comments were about getting a used item that had some defect. Others said they got an error on the LED screen after a few uses and the manual was no help. A few purchasers said the item didn’t work at all.

Because of their distinctive name and ability to shorten the cooking time of many dishes in half, Instant Pots have exploded in popularity.

Nothing beats being able to eat your favorite slow-cooking meals in half the time as you would with traditional methods.

Chicken Legs

Testing the air fryer with chicken legs gave me a chance to try to pressure cooker function since legs take longer to cook. I pressure cooked them for 25 minutes to make sure they were thoroughly cooked and then air fried for another 15 minutes. They were great, evenly cooked and crisp.

Frozen fries

The manufacturer of the Instant Pot Duo Crisp gave no clear information about the amount of fries to be air fried at one time so I used my judgement. I didn’t want to overcrowd the basket and block air flow so I put just over 1 pound of fries in and used the recommended time of 10 minutes. The fries were perfectly crisp on the outside and tender to the bite. They were also evenly browned and tasted just like deep fried fries.

White sandwich bread

I could only get a few slices of white sandwich bread in the basket because of it’s shape but they were toasted under 6 minutes. I would have liked them to be a little more evenly browned but they were crisp.

Vegetables (carrots, Zucchini, eggplant)

Vegetables were cooked perfectly and with only a drizzle of oil. They crisped up nicely and weren’t mushy, which I half expected for the zucchini and eggplant since they have such a high water content.

Key Performance Factors Analysis

Noise

The use of a pressure cooker is bound to create some noise. The hissing sound produced by the pressure cooker function is identical to that of a standard pressure cooker. The general level of noise is reasonable.

Control

features a wide range of options that, at first glance, can be intimidating, but are actually quite simple. There are buttons for the air fryer lid, the pressure cooker lid, and a combination of the two.

Cooking

This model sears better than older versions I‘ve tried and faster too. Unlike older models, I can easily release the pressure by pressing a button.

Cleaning

I cleaned with a moist cloth and mild dish soap, then removed the soap residue with a damp dish sponge. I was annoyed by the splatter on the lid, but I followed the manufacturer’s advice and sprayed baking soda and vinegar on it before wiping it clean.

Noise demonstration:

Downsides while cooking.

The air fryer is large so it takes up a lot of counter space and the hissing of the pressure cooker is loud. The air fryer basket holds a lot less than you expect from the overall size.

More than 200 of the 311 customers who gave a two-star review complained about the ceramic coating on the air fryer basket. Photos of severely chipped baskets were circulated.

The Duo Crisp is ranked second among sous vide devices and third among electric air fryers. I mean, Amazon has thousands of products in various categories, so the results are impressive. The following is a breakdown of the Amazon reviews:

84 percent of the ratings were 5 stars, indicating that 20,008 buyers adore this model. Customers praised the air fryer’s ease of use. Some even claimed that they couldn’t cook, but the air fryer worked flawlessly. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp has received a 4 out of 5 rating from 2889 customers. A few people complained about the scratched air fryer basket and the inadequate instructions. Others complained that the device was simply too large and difficult to store. The air fryer lid has a storage base that you must connect once it has cooled, which most reviewers found inconvenient. The reviews for the three-star ratings were nearly identical. All 819 buyers agreed that the Instant Pot brand was fantastic, but the air fryer was not. It is too heavy, difficult to store, and has too many moving parts to clean.

Instant Pot Vortex Plus 6-in-1 6-Quart Large Air Fryer Oven

Specifications :

  • Model NameVortex Plus
  • Brand Instant Pot
  • Capacity 6 Quarts
  • Color Stainless Steel
  • Voltage 120 Volts
  • Control Method : Touch

Check Price on Amazon

On Amazon, the Instant Vortex is rated number 6 in air fryers and number 3 in dehydrators. This unit is made by Instant Pot so I had big expectations.

Overview:

The digital interface isn’t overwhelming. It’s very user-friendly. There are only simple touch buttons for cooking styles, consisting of air fry, bake, reheat, and roast. So, there are no additional buttons specific to particular foods. You are free to adjust the temperature and time by increments of 5 to customize your cooking preferences. Once set, press start or cancel to readjust.

It is surprisingly powerful in comparison to others. In turn, it delivers crispy, even brown finishes every time. The whirring sound it makes while working isn’t louder than a microwave. And the small size is another plus, as it isn’t very obstructive and closes with a good serving of food inside the non-stick basket. The 6-quart bin is large enough for a whole pound of chicken.

The Instant Vortex 4-in-1 Air Fryer has its advantages, including its eye candy sleek aesthetics. There are ‘add food’ and ‘turn food over’ prompts paired with beeping noises to remind you to shake and turn food over. If you don’t have any countertop storage space, a cabinet or shelf will do as the appliance has a short stature. It’s an angular design you’ll love to eye on your counter and find helpful in making healthy, crisp one-pot meals.

Chicken legs

The Instant Vortex didn’t arrive with a recipe book in the package and the manual was hardly any help. I air fried the chicken wings for 35 minutes and they came out well. Not as good as the Cosori Air fryer but definitely evenly browned.

Frozen fries

This test turned out fairly well. The air fryer indicated that I should “turn food” halfway through and by the end the fries were crisp. A few showed that they were cooked thoroughly but just didn’t have a nice crisp. I’m happy that the air fryer stayed warm to the touch while cooking. Some air fryers have a tendency to overheat.

White sandwich bread

Thanks to the square basket, I was able to fit 4 slices of white sandwich bread easily. They came out crisp but did take longer than the Ninja Foodi and the Cosori to toast. Overall it was a good test for the bread.

Vegetables (carrots, Zucchini, eggplant)

Vegetables were perfectly done. The carrots seemed to dry out a little more than I liked but overall, the zuchini and eggplants were perfectly done.

Key Performance Factors Analysis

Noise

It’s small and compact so the noise level is not as high as larger air fryers. It really sounds like a hair dryer on low.

Control

The controls are nothing special on this unit. They are straightforward and easy to use.

Cooking

The touchscreen and dial are easy to operate, without any unnecessary complexity. When using the air fryer, you will receive notifications when the appliance is ready and when it is time to flip the food.

Cleaning

I cleaned the heating coil with a damp cloth and washed the basket by hand since it’s not dishwasher safe.

Noise demonstration:

Downsides while cooking

The roasting and baking settings are limited to relatively particular products – don’t expect to bake a large variety of items here. Using the bake function on potatoes will have them crisp on the outside and tender in the centre but muffins will be far too crisp.

Because the Instant Vortex does not give any recipes, you will have to hunt for them online. They’ll offer you a general time and temperature guide, but that’ll be it. In fact, the bare-bones instructions are my primary gripe with this air fryer. It’s not user friendly. As a result, much of what you accomplish with this air fryer will have to be learned by trial and error.

A total of 84 percent of the global ratings were 5 stars. Many images of perfectly cooked food were uploaded as purchasers praised the Instant Vortex. Many reviews spoke about a solution to the burnt plastic smell that the air fryer emits on first use. Over 3000 of them agree that if you run the air fryer for 30 minutes at 400 degrees, it will get rid of the smell.

The 4 star reviews were much the same and most of those purchasers said their issues were fixed and they loved the air fryer. Of the 420 ratings that were 1 star, the majority of the complaints were about the plastic smell that they couldn’t get rid of after 6 or 7 cycles. Others said they ended up burning food in the air fryer because it got too hot, too fast. Only 420 ratings were 1 star reviews which means the majority of customers loved the air fryer.

List of Air Fryers We Reviewed Based on Customers’ Feedback and Reviews

Best for Groups: Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Specifications :

    • Weight: 21.00 pounds
    • 1800-watt power
    • Viewing window
    • Seven functions: air fry, convection bake, convection broil, bake, broil, warm, toast
    • Adjustable thermostat with 60-minute timer/auto-shutoff, toast shade selector-timer

Check Price on Amazon

Overview:

Shaped like a mini oven, as the name suggests, the Cuisinart Toaster Oven doesn’t have the typical shape of electric fryers. A plus that allows you to lay food flat in its broad, shallow basket. So more air passes through the food for exceptionally even browning and crisping without tossing or shaking the basket.

According to Cuisinart, the model is perfect for families, holding up to two pounds of fries or 4-pounds of chicken. There is no need to preheat, and the controls are devoid of many buttons, so the oven is straightforward to use. Simply turn the dials to set the temperature and cooking time. All parts, however, have to be hand washed.

Most countertop convection ovens in its price range are digital, but this unit is analog. It makes up the difference by nixing the need for additional appliances hence space-efficiency. The settings give you the option to broil, bake, air fry, and toast your favorites. Depending on how you feel, bake a 12-inch pizza, air fry 3-pounds of chicken wings, roast 4-pounds of seafood, or toast six slices of bread at once. If you don’t already have a toaster oven, you get two large countertop appliances with the versatility of one with this toaster oven.

Pros:

  • Evenly toasted food
  • Two appliances in one
  • Excellent brown, crisp food
  • Perfect for feeding a large family

Cons:

  • Analog controls
  • Hand clean only
  • Interior isn’t nonstick

What we liked:

  • Space efficiency: An ideal reason to stop shopping around for toaster ovens, if you are fascinated with air frying your meals. Its handy, multi-function settings give you the option to toast in the mornings and bake, broil, or convectional fry at night.
  • Above-average crispiness: Unlike most, you won't have to pile on food on top of each other. Food spreads out in the spacious tray, getting you even crispy foods in relatively quick cooking times with a juicy, tenderness. The results look and taste like deep-fried goodies.

What we didn’t like:

  • Not easy to clean: Clean up isn't fun. The stainless-steel basket and drip pan are uncoated. Removing oil spots after batter-fried onion rings or chicken takes effort. Before use, line the interior with necessary coverings.

Overview:

From the onset, we loved the color. The Dash is available in a glossy aqua, white, black, or red exterior. Its small frame is sure to find a home on your tiny kitchen counter. All our prior picks mainly served family-sized portions. But this little cooker makes one person servings.

The model has half the capacity of most electric fryers. That’s why it is the perfect gift and great for RVs, dorm rooms, and suitcases. The small volume also means better brown, crisp desserts and dishes. No preheating is necessary. But for the best results, add only a half-pound of food and toss or stir continuously.

The bassinet in the Dash has a nonstick coating and won’t chunk the dishwasher. You can choose the digital version if you don’t fancy analog. Overall, the appliance gives a decent crisp outcome with a very compact, inexpensive footprint.

Pros:

  • No need to preheat
  • One person servings
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Nonstick, dishwasher-safe rack

Cons:

  • Only cooks half-pound of food well at a time

What we liked:

  • Easy cleaning: Small enough to go unnoticed. The Dash is super easy to clean in your dishwasher. It also makes tidying up after cooking a separate dish for picky eaters a breeze.

  • It's a perfect gift: It's great for tiny accommodations and single people who want a personal convection oven. If you're tired of microwaved foods, buy the Dash and widen your menu options. One serving portions of sliced fish sticks, veggie burgers, and more come out crispy and tender on the inside. Also, it's a better way to have fried food like bacon and mozzarella sticks without drying on a paper towel.

What we didn’t like:

  • Shaking the ingredients: The tight frying chamber forces you to pile food on top of each other. The outcome is uneven crisping with some pieces half crispy, half uncooked, or cooked and crunchy. To avoid this, you will need to shake the fries while frying or use a tong to give it a good stir. It is worth noting that the interruption can extend the cooking time.

Best Value: Cuisinart Compact Air Fryer

Specifications :

    • Powerful airflow and high heat
    • Compact design and large capacity
    • Maximum temperature: 450 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Viewing window to monitor browning progress
    • Features include air fry basket and baking pan
    • Brushed stainless steel exterior looks very professional

Overview:

This model’s intriguing, compact shape is sure to grab your attention. While the Cuisinart and Breville were large in width and height, the Cuisinart Compact Air Fryer is much smaller. Yet, the interior is adequate for food to lay flat. The difference is that the Cuisinart Compact has dropped the toaster function.

The face has only two knobs. So reheating and air cooking is uncomplicated because it is devoid of presets for different functions such as “dehydration” or specific foods. Just estimate the temperature and times between the indicated amounts when you’re ready to start.

Pros:

  • Straightforward programming
  • It doesn’t require preheating.
  • Achieves temperature up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Well done browning and crisping

Cons:

  • Analog controls
  • Parts are uncoated and not dishwasher safe.

What we liked:

  • The Viewing Window: Honestly, we didn't mind approximating the time and temperature because of the viewing window. The glass made observation easy. If you overestimate the time needed, you can watch and turn off the Cuisinart Compact before anything burns or is overcooked.
  • Small and simple design: There are two dials: one for temperature and one for time. A lot of what makes the compact fryer fun to use is its small size that is great for small apartments. Despite the tiny footprint, you can heat an open grill-cheese sandwich on the 8 x 10 sized platter.

What we didn’t like:

  • Hand cleaning is required: When crunched for time, you'll leave wiping down for later. During that time, grease and crumbs will harden, causing the tidy up process to take more effort. Always try to lay out a napkin or foil to reduce the amount of stick-on food.

Best Countertop Oven with Air Fryer: Breville Smart Oven Air

Specifications :

    • Weight: 14.52 pounds
    • Dimension: 15 x 17 x 10 inches
    • Backlit easy read LED digital display
    • Nonstick cavity coating
    • Viewing window

Overview:

If you need a toaster oven, air fryer combo, the Breville Smart Oven Air can get both jobs done well. It is a sleek replacement for all your kitchen counter appliances but can set you back a bundle. With enough room for a 12-inch pizza, 4-slices of toast, chicken, or a 6-cup muffin tray. The Breville has a bright oven light that is very useful at night and to observe foods far back on the rack.

It features a generously-sized rack that encourages the spreading of food for maximum browning and crisping you’re happy to indulge in repeatedly. There is no drip pan. You have to wipe down the coated cavity when done.

If you’re a novice, prepare to research and experiment with the timer and thermostat as the manual doesn’t suggest cooking instructions. Like the Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven, it is relatively large, costs a pretty penny, and does well at making your oven and toaster obsolete.

Pros:

  • Viewing window
  • Dual functionality
  • Digital programming
  • Crispy and toasty food produced

Cons:

  • Large
  • Complicated manual
  • Not dishwasher safe

What we liked:

  • The additional features: One of its features is reheating. While a microwave warms food much faster and makes meat rubbery, the Breville warm food uniformly without changing its texture. From reheating leftovers to toasting bread to baking cookies or pizza, you probably will use it daily. Possibly even forget you have an oven until you need to roast your turkey.
  • Digital controls: For novices, the presets are helpful until you learn recipes cooking techniques. Then you’ll move onto customizing the times and temperature of various foods. The backlit display is very helpful, whether day or night, as the LED monitor is can always be read with ease.

What we didn’t like:

  • No cooking recommendations in the manual: The lack of how-to cooking instructions gives you the freedom to experiment and research. But we think air frying first-timers would appreciate cook times, temperatures, and portion guidance for foods when getting started.

Overview:

The first thing you will notice is the sleek, modern design. Beyond good looks, the construct is very functional and great for safety. The non-stick, FDA-certified, PFOA-free pan and the detachable basket is equipped with a cool-touch handle and button guard to prevent accidental detachment. Thanks to the design, the unit is also quiet and is very efficient at crisping.

If you’re a novice, you’ll find the eight presets particularly helpful. Unlike most air fryers on the market, this model of GoWISE has a built-in alarm function that reminds you to shake your ingredients in increments of 5, 10, or 15-minutes. So, there’s no chance you’ll burn your favorite foods.

Most fryers are only available in black or silver except for a few like the Dash Compact Air Fryer. The GoWISE GW22731 is available in four colors: purple, white, black, and red. Given its high-temperature range of 180-400 degrees Fahrenheit, broiling, grilling, and baking food are also fun cooking additions to air frying. Overall, with the GoWISE, you get a savvy, crisping instant pot for under a hundred bucks.

Pros:

  • Quiet
  • Digital controls
  • Good serving size
  • Reasonable priced
  • One year warranty

Cons:

  • Non-stick liner
  • Nooks and crannies take an effort to clean.

What we liked:

  • Smart Controls. No complaints of burnt food here. The shake alarm is useful, ensuring the food is stirred often enough for even cooking and excellent results. We were also fans of the presets that set the cooking instructions for fries, pork, steak, chicken, shrimp, cake, fish, and pizza. These controls made it easy to operate the GoWISE without much prior oil-free frying experience.
  • Affordable price. The typical cost of high-end models will have you think twice about confirming checkout. But not this model. It’s inexpensive and packs plenty of features that don’t overcomplicate cooking but make its use easy.

What we didn’t like:

  • The non-stick liner. GoWISE claims the model is dishwasher safe. However, after several washes, the coating in the basket peels off. Eventually, you will need to line the bottom of the cooker to avoid messy cleanups. And, also reduce the number of crumbs that fall into the nooks and crannies, creating more work when you are ready to clean the product.

Overview:

The Krups Fast Fry Deluxe Digital Air Fryer bears many similarities to the GoWISE GW22731 Air Fryer. Except the price is a tad bit higher. Due to the fryer’s barrel shape, it has a classic look that doesn’t fill up more space than the average coffee maker. But, the browning and crisping aren’t spectacular. It does a decent job of adding a light crunch.

So much so that we doubt anyone would mistake its results for deep-fat fried chicken or fries. To maximize the crunch attained, preheat the countertop appliance. The good news is the digital presets cover all the usual food basics, including chips, steak, chicken, pizza, cake, and gives additional cooking options of grilling and roasting at the touch of a button.

In terms of cleaning, the frying bowl is dishwasher friendly. If you do decide to handwash, the coated interior is a breeze to clean. On Amazon, the appliance has an 84% 5-star rating from owners who think the Krups Fast Fry Deluxe is fantastic. The biggest pet peeve, though, is the confusing manual. The bottom line is it’s great for reheating food, adding a reasonable crisp, and space-efficient for counters.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Digital controls
  • Easy storage
  • Removable parts that are dishwasher safe

Cons:

  • Unclear manual
  • Preheating required
  • Light browning and crunch results

What we liked:

  • Digital features. On top of the unit are the digital controls. It ensures high precision temperature control between the range of 175 to 395 degrees Fahrenheit and has a 60-minute timer auto-off with an auto ring bell.
  • Simple digital screen. It is immensely simple to use as the model features an intuitive electrical touchpad. That is, the buttons are clearly labeled. So, users can understand and use the design immediately without consciously thinking about how or reading too deeply into the manual.

What we didn’t like:

  • Light air frying results. While the crisping is nothing to brag about, the food comes out cooked with a light crunch. There is no feature to instruct you when to shake. Instead, it recommends that users shake the frying bowl halfway through cooking.

Overview:

We loved the price of this instant pot, so it’s great for a tight budget. That said, there are a couple of drawbacks, but affordability is a huge selling point. During the tests, this hot air technology did a pretty good job of making food golden and crisp. You will need to preheat and flip the food over to get crunchy, even results. However, this is common to most air frying technology.

The versatility allows the appliance to bake, grill, and roast dishes up to 30% faster, according to Farberware. The food assigned buttons on the digital pad take the guesswork out of the process, making the model easy to use. And the interface is also flexible enough to be adjusted for different cooking times and temperatures. Of note is that the bassinet is troublesome to reinsert into the appliance, and the cooking odor isn’t low.

It is available in black or white and has a capacity for 2 pounds of food. It works well with frozen food, so you can opt-out of microwave use for crisp pizza and tender leftovers. The model racked up over 1520 5-star reviews on Walmart, with several users describing it as fantastic. If you’ve been agonizing over the expense of other brands, consider the Farberware. Most alternatives can’t compete with the price point, plus the manufacturer throws in a cookbook and a 2-year warranty.

Pros:

  • Great price
  • Cookbook included
  • Non-stick interior and dishwasher safe

Cons:

  • Preheating required
  • Tricky to remove the basket
  • Incomplete manual explanations

What we liked:

  • Great sale price. It’s the price that made many owners initially purchase. Afterward, they came to discover it was good value for money. Though inexpensive, the Farberware 3.2-Quart Digital Oil-Less Fryer offers most of the digital functionalities of higher-priced air fryers.

What we didn’t like:

  • Hard to lock bassinet into position. The food hamper is hard to reposition, which is annoying given that we encounter the issue when we shake the food or place it in the dishwasher. Be careful when clicking it out of place as the inner and outer tray separate from each other. So, that the bottom try doesn’t unexpected fall off while you’re holding the handle.

Best Simple Air Fryer Toaster Oven: Black and Decker Crisp ‘N Bake Air Fry Toaster Oven

Overview:

If you’re a fan of the brand, it’s exciting to know they have an air fryer toaster oven. What’s better is that it’s not as fancy as the Cuisinart Airfryer Toaster Oven or the Breville Smart Oven Air. Like the latter, it has plenty of room to spread the food for even browning without shaking or much stirring. And if you do need to flip food over, space makes it very convenient.

The Black and Decker Crisp includes a state-of-the-art toaster in addition to air frying capacities – a plus for individuals who don’t already have a toaster oven. It won’t roast your turkey but is good at making respectable toast, small cakes, and French fries. Honestly, the chips aren’t that great. Its strong suit is “frying” battered or frozen food. Otherwise, it doesn’t muster much crispness.

There isn’t a pan below the tray or above the heating coils to catch splatter. There is, however, a dishwasher safe crumb tray. Everything else in the interior is handwash only. Be prepared to do some research or experiment with times and temperatures as the manual information is limited. Of course, at this price, some functionalities are less than ideal. The bottom line is very affordable with stainless-steel durability and useful accessories such as a glass viewing door and external crumb tray.

Pros:

  • Affordably priced
  • No preheating required
  • Crumb tray

Cons:

  • Manual controls
  • Manual isn’t helpful.
  • Hard to clean
  • Thin-walled stainless steel

What we liked:

  • The affordability. Like we've said, it's an acceptable appliance to start with if you're budget is tight. It primarily does the job of a toaster oven and air fries most foods, but it's not the same as a deep frier.

What we didn’t like:

  • Thin walls. The Crisp 'N Bake Air Fry Toaster Oven isn't well insulated. As such, dents appear quickly, and it isn't the best place to store food and keep it warm. So, don't expect to be doing much countertop baking. Depending on the nature of the indent, some can be bent back into shape.

Overview:

The round, square design is very similar to the Cosori Air Fryer but with a larger serving size of 6-quart. The square bassinet allows the food to be laid flat and sectioned into vegetables, carbohydrates, and protein. So, you can cook a whole meal and have everything ready for plating at the same time. The round construct also aids the circulation of heated air through the model for more even results.

In addition to the usual touchscreen digital settings and adjustable 60-minute timer, the heating system includes rapid air circulation technology that makes preparing food quick and convenient. A maximum temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit is achievable, allowing users to cook in an assortment of styles from baking to broiling and more.

It is simple to use, plus the coated bassinet is complete with two removable crisping trays. The temperature range is typical of most and goes up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While there are zero plastic smells produced during cooking, the Gourmia GAF645 Digital is noticeably noisy. What makes the model great is the advantageous space and heating technology that fits in more food and gets them ready faster.

Pros:

  • Spacious interior
  • No plastic smell
  • Rapid heating system
  • Crisping and browning results

Cons:

  • Noisy
  • A bit expensive
  • Plenty of buttons

What we liked:

  • Rapid heating system. The RadiVection 360 Technology circulates heated air fast in all directions, ensuring food cooks evenly for maximum tastiness and crisping. A 1700-watt energy heating rod drives the powerful heating system.
  • No plastic smells. Some frying instant pots smell like burning plastic when cooking. That isn’t the case here. No plastic odor comes from the appliance on the first use or multiple uses later. What’s better is unlike deep friers that will transform your home’s aroma into a smokehouse, the model also gives off very little food smells.

What we didn’t like:

  • Plenty of buttons. The Gourmia GAF645 Digital doesn’t have more buttons than the average digital air fryer. But these preset buttons go unused because most users take advantage of the spacious interior. And experiment with cooking times and temperatures to cook whole meals at once.

Overview:

Perfect for individual use, this model has a capacity of 2 quarts. Though that doesn’t hold much to serve a group, it’s enough for a family of one or cooking kid-sized portions. The added benefit of the size is efficiency. As hot air moves around faster in the tiny convection oven to cook quickly and make dishes crispy.

The front-facing touchscreen is wonderfully devoid of numerous one-touch controls. The user is free to customize the cooking time and temperature by increments of 5 to their liking. It’s lightweight. Perfect for carrying on trips or gifting to a college student. Tossing the food to stir for an even golden brown crunch is also hassle-free because of the device’s lightness.

Unlike the Instant Vortex 4-in-1 Air Fryer, this Crux model’s exterior shell stays cool to the touch while cooking. So, you won’t have to fear that you’re exposing other countertop items to immense heat. Nor worry, inquisitive, children will burn themselves accidentally. That’s just one of the many reasons, the Crux 2.6 Qt Touchscreen Air Convection Fryer is one of the best air fryers picks for 2021 and possibly worth a spot on your counter.

Pros:

  • Digital controls
  • Overheating protection
  • Dishwasher safe basket

Cons:

  • Small capacity

What we liked:

  • Easy use and cleanup. There aren't many places for crumbs to hide, making cleanup easy peasy. Even people who can't cook can make tasty, crispy food with the Crux 2.6 Qt. Touchscreen Air Convection Fryer. That's how simple the touch screen system is to operate. It's a tiny convection oven that will quickly take the place of your microwave and is much more versatile.
  • Protection against overheating. Some air convection ovens will smell like burning plastic while working, especially at high temperatures of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. But not this device. The exterior retains heat well, so it feels cool to the touch.

What we didn’t like:

  • Tiny basket. Best for individual use. It’s hard to fit two large pieces of chicken breast into the frying bowl. It’s even harder to hold the food in when interior accessories are inside the bassinet. The small capacity requires servings to be portioned and cooked, which lengthens cooking time for groups and large batches of food.

Overview:

The 3.4-quart, non-stick basket satisfies 2 to 4 people with crunchy, tender foods. It’s preset is complete with programs to roast, air fry, bake, steam, saute, and grill. Otherwise, you can manually set the time and temperature options to suit your dish. The handle stays cool to the touch for a safe grip. Which is great because users have to lightly wrestle with the door just a little as the door does not glide in smoothly.

This model also has Rapid Air Technology to circulate hot air fast throughout the device for crispier taste and textures in a few minutes. Cleanup is a pleasure, as the coated basket is dishwasher friendly. In addition to the manual, the manufacturer included a recipe booklet. Another accessory included is a basket divider; its silicone tabs fit into the slots on the sides of the fryer bassinet. With the divider in, you can cook different foods on each side of the basket at the same time, thereby doubling space efficiency.

The price is also advantageous because it won’t set you back a bundle. The model is the ideal size for cooking enough food and convenient storage. On another positive note, the interior surface was easy to clean, often needing only a paper towel to rid it of messes. It is also safe to use tinfoil inside the basket for even faster cleanup.

Pros:

  • Digital settings
  • Large food capacity
  • Accessories included
  • Coated, dishwasher safe basket

Cons:

  • Preheating required
  • Basket hard to reinsert
  • Limited information provided by manual

What we liked:

  • Accessories included. It’s rare to see accessories not sold separately. So, it was an appreciated and welcomed surprise. In addition to the divider is a baking pan to use for cornbread and cakes. Tip: leave the silicone tips on the divider. The silicone tips hold the separator in place and manage high temperatures well.

What we didn’t like:

  • Hard to reposition the basket. It is hard to reinsert the crisper tray into the appliance, especially when hot. To avoid this stress, after shaking, insert the basket in a scooping motion. Hold downward and place the front end in, the bassinet should slide right in with no resistance.

Best Non-Digital: Chefman TurboFry 3.6 Quart Air Fryer Oven

Overview:

The performance of this air fryer was impressive, producing crispy, even results within 60-minutes or less. The Chefman TurboFry 3.6 Quart Air Fryer Oven is a sleek, multi-function appliance that can bake, grill, fry, and roast virtually anything. It boasts a large, flat basket design deep enough to hold 3.5 liters of food, and has more space than its round air fry basket competitors.

Its small footprint also makes storage worry-free. So, it is perfect for dorms, offices, RV trips, and small kitchens yet has plenty of space for families too. The dial is analog and unusual as the knob has dual controls allowing for both the time and temperature to be set. The basket includes a removable tray that serves as a divider to hold its maximum capacity.

The best detail of this air fryer is the vented, lightweight basket and tray. These vents promote air circulation of even results, easy cleanup, and dripping if you don’t discard grease buildup. All round, the TurboFry is a good buy for both families of one to four, considering its food capacity and small footprint. If you’re someone who prefers exact times and temperatures, there is a digital version available.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Quick, crispy, even results
  • Compact, smart system
  • Lightweight basket

Cons:

  • Analog controls
  • The non-stick coating wears away.

What we liked:

  • Compact, smart construct. The basket holds up to 3.5 liters of food, and the design has plenty of vents. While the vents get extremely hot, the body of the convection fryer remains cool to touch. Eliminating the danger of heating other counter appliances that are in direct contact with the fryer. Its other safety feature ensures the device only operates when plugged in with a fully inserted basket.

What we didn’t like:

  • Mechanical Dial. Analog controls aren’t as precise as digital models. Users have to estimate the temperature between notches on the button. The mechanism then makes it hard to program accurate, exact times and temperatures when preparing meals in the instant pot convection fryer.

Best Dual Rack: Chefman 6.3-Quart Digital Air Fryer

Specifications :

    • Weight: 19.41 pounds
    • Interior lighting
    • 1200-watt power
    • Extra-large 6-liter capacity
    • Temperature range: 90-400 degrees Fahrenheit

Check Price on Amazon

Overview:

In a category of its own, the Chefman 6.3-Quart Digital Air Fryers comes with two racks rather than the typical basket, which has its advantages. The shelves are easy to clean and make cooking two different foods at once simple. Imagine pizza on top with hot wings on the bottom. So whether you are extra hungry or have an extra guest, there is space for the additional serving.

Just like an oven, there’s a window, interior lights, and removable parts to make space for a whole, 4-pound chicken. Its versatility is non-traditional, allowing for air frying, rotisserie, and dehydrating with eight digital presets for popular food items. If anything adheres to the drip tray, air fryer basket, or removable racks after dishwashing, easily scrub with a sponge to clean.

We didn’t like that the temperature increases by increments of ten instead of the typical five, but owners were happy with the crunchy results. If you need an air fryer with a rotisserie cooking component, this Chefman model is of great value.

Pros:

  • Crunchy results
  • Easy to clean
  • Non-traditional versatility
  • Digital system and glass window

Cons:

  • Large
  • Average cord length

What we liked:

  • Dishwasher safe. The insertable parts are easy to clean by hand if necessary. And the holes allow grease to run through, so juices don’t harden, and only soaking or light scrubbing is needed to remove grease buildup. It is also safe to use foil inside the convection oven to make cleaning more breezy.
  • Non-traditional versatility. With its 3-in-1 functionality, you’ll save cabinet space. While using one machine to rotisserie meats, dehydrate fresh fruits, and air fry your favorite recipes. With purchase, you gain access to Club Chefman for tailormade, step-by-step instructions, and tutorial videos.

What we didn’t like:

  • Large exterior. It is hard to get out of the box due to the size. However, set up is simple. There’s no hiding the appliance in cabinets or on counters as the footprint is quite large for small kitchens. But it is relatively tiny in comparison to a regular rotisserie machine.

Final Thoughts

Based on all the doctors I covered, I’ve decided that the winner of all these air fryers is the Cosori Air Fryer Max XL. The Cosori air fryer truly is as good as the reviews claim it to be. The air fryer is easy to use, great for stress-free cooking, and consistently produces delicious food, although the handle might become loose after some time and need to be tightened.

It offers 13 fine-tuned cooking settings that activate with a single touch, so there’s no need to battle with complicated cooking procedures. One of the best features of this fryer is that the inside basket is square rather than spherical, as with most others. This gives you more room to add ingredients and allows you to serve three to five people in one basket. And even if it gets really messy the non-stick coating makes it incredibly easy to clean. It aced all of the performance tests and is the most loved by Amazon shoppers.

Runner Up

The Gourmia Digital Air Fryer is, in my opinion, one of the best models available. It virtually always produces excellent air fried results and is also suitable for roasting and broiling. The computerized controls are especially useful, and clean-up is a breeze because the basket can be thrown in the dishwasher.

Lifting the air fryer cover can be difficult. The weight is obvious even if you only flip lids once or twice while cooking. This is also one of the more expensive models.

Also Great

The Ninja Foodi also performed well overall and has a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Amazon. The wide, colourful digital display was simple to operate and was divided into distinct parts for each function.

The slow cooker features a high and low setting, as well as 15-minute intervals for cooking. When the food is finished, the Ninja automatically changes to warm mode, and the timer displays how long it has been at that temperature. This is really great if you want to run some errands but still come back to warm food that is safe to eat.

Except for the pressure cooker lid, all removable elements are ceramic-coated, non-stick, and dishwasher safe. This aspect of the washing-up is a little problematic because the main unit and lids have weird gaps that are difficult to get into.

Tips and Tricks for Cooking in an Air Fryer

Use air fryer cookbooks. While it’s nice to have a recipe book included in your purchase, you don’t need to depend on the manufacturer for one. There are many good cookbooks to help you get more bang for your buck with your fryer’s increased use. Go ahead and experiment, churn out chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, grilled salmon, and more.

During use, give your air oven five inches of space on all sides. The device cooks food with mainly hot air and a bit of oil. That’s it. If it isn’t well-ventilated, the quality of the end-product suffers. By all means, tuck it in a corner when in storage. But, when in use, rest it on a stable, heat-proof surface and give it five inches of space on all sides.

Preheat your air fryer. Use the manual as a guide for specific instructions. However, even when models and recipes don’t mention warming the machine, the results often benefit from preheating. Most manufacturers suggest 10 to 15 minutes of preheating. This action gives you plenty of time to prep ingredients. Plus, preheating ensures your food crisps instead of steams.

Use the right amount of oil. Always refer to recipes and the manual for oil portion specifics. It can be hard to judge oil requirements for food, especially frozen ones. For most recipes, add only 1/2 teaspoon of oil per batch. When cooking frozen foods like chicken nuggets or mozzarella sticks, use a smaller amount or just a spitz of non-stick spray. To get crisp, golden finished products that aren’t soggy.

Cut vegetables 1/4 inches wide. The basket of air fryers possesses holes to allow for maximum airflow. Unfortunately, these holes are wide enough for tiny pieces of legumes to fall through and quickly burn. A french fry’s width is the perfect width for cutting food that cooks fast and won’t drop through the basket cracks. If you have a mandoline, use it for thick, uniform slices every time.

Use thick coating, not loose batter recipes. Avoid using wet batters. Moist doughs work well in deep-fat fryers because the vat of hot oil instantly sets it in place. The air fryer instructions for corn dogs and tempura are thicker. If you don’t have the adapted recipe, use the three-step breading process of flour, egg dip, and crisp coating.

Cook in batches. Air fryer baskets are typically small. Allowing only comfortable space for two servings of protein or four servings of vegetables. It’s tempting to pack in more food. But you’ll usually be disappointed with the results. Get better, fully cooked results in less time by cooking smaller batches consecutively. That will allow for better airflow. You should note that air fryer cooking is faster, so it won’t be much longer than traditional pot and pan cooking.

Wash your air fryer often. This appliance isn’t like your microwave or oven. Air fryers cook food directly on the surface rather than in a microwavable dish or pot. So, the fry basket collects oil and yucky food residue with every use. To prevent aftertastes, smells, or blocking of vents, unplug, let the machine cool and wipe down the unit. Then wash the fry basket and pan by hand or in the dishwasher with soapy water and non-abrasive tools.

How to Clean an Air Fryer

Air fryers are incredibly convenient. The process isn’t messy as the device uses little oil, and the cooking basket is enclosed to prevent splattering. But like all appliances. It needs proper cleaning and maintenance to ensure optimal effectiveness for years to come.

So, there is a need to clean it after every use. And this makes cleaning simple as you won’t have to deal with stubborn, hard-to-clean crusts of food. To ensure appropriate, preservative cleaning, we’ve laid out the steps on how to clean your air fryer like a pro.

The Easiest Way to Clean Air Fryers

What You’ll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Non-abrasive sponge
  • Cotton or microfiber cloths
  • Soft bristle toothbrush or brush
  1. Unplug

The first step in cleaning your countertop convection oven is, of course, to turn the air fryer off, unplug, and let it cool. This safety precaution reduces the likelihood of fires or electrocution. Once unplugged from the wall socket or extension cord, wait about 30 minutes for it to cool. Removing the basket and pan causes the primary unit to lose heat faster.

  1. Wipe down the exterior and heating element

Use a damp cotton or microfiber cloth to wipe down the sides of the appliance. Next, turn the countertop fryer upside-down. Continue by wiping down the heating element.

  1. Clean the interior

Use hot water and a non-abrasive sponge to wipe down the inside. If hardened food residue doesn’t come off the primary unit, make a baking soda paste with water and scrub with a non-abrasive sponge or soft brush. Then wipe it off with a cotton or microfiber cloth.

  1. Washing the basket and tray

The basket, pan, and accessories of most fryers are dishwasher safe. Just load them in and run your regular cycle. If not, cleaning is quick and easy with hot, soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge.

  1. Soaking the removable parts

In instances where food residue is stuck on the basket, drip tray, or both, fill with hot water and let it soak for 10 minutes. Wash with soapy water and a soft brush or sponge after soaking. Repeat if needed.

  1. Dry

Lay everything out to air dry for a few hours or use a soft cloth to pat-dry the primary unit, tray, and basket for reassembly.

Additional tips:

  • When cooking consecutive servings of food, you can wait until after the final batch to clean.
  • Always use non-abrasive cleaning cloth and sponges to remove residual grease and stuck foodstuff from the basket or pan.
  • Avoid using utensils, steel wool, or scrubbing sponges to remove food particles. The non-stick lining in the air fryer is thin and scratches off with ease.
  • Only submerge the removable parts, not the air fryer. The primary unit is electrical, and water will ruin it.
  • When food hardens onto the drip pan or basket, soak in hot water, soap, and optional baking soda. Soaking will soften stuck-on foods and make it easier to remove with a sponge or brush.

Safety Precautions

When properly cleaned, stored, and maintained units last for years without problems or mechanical issues. With a little care, your device will provide healthy, hassle-free meals for a long time. It is important to remember the following:

  • Do read the manual – Before you set up and cook with your air fryer, carefully read the owner’s manual. There is valuable guidance on how to use it properly and contact details to ask for help.
  • Don’t use perforated liners with small servings – Without enough weight to hold down the paper, the air will rustle it, causing uneven or uncooked results.
  • Don’t burn your hands or countertop – Do use silicone gloves or oven mitts to hold hot components, and use tongs for maneuvering of heated food. Rest the appliance and lid on a silicone trivet or heat-safe surface.
  • Do visually inspect the device before use – Ensure cords are intact, and the cooking chamber apparatus is in good condition. If you find damaged components when unboxing, contact customer service to have them replaced.
  • Do inspect cords before plugging them into a socket – Unplugging a damaged or frayed cord can cause injury or even death.
  • Do follow cookbook instructions – Shake and set the cooking times and temperatures per recipe specification to ensure properly cooked food.
  • Do cook small batches and shake the basket halfway through cooking – This technique improves circulation for better, uniform distribution of heat.
  • Don’t over grease the machine – Only use the recommended amount of oil and food approved by the manufacturer. Excess lard causes white smoke to exit the vents.
  • Do listen for the click when attaching the bassinet and pan – So, you don’t face challenges sliding it into the unit or cause an unexpected fall and spillage of food.
  • Don’t use salt, wet batters, or aerosol sprays in the fryer –These substances might break down the non-stick coating. However, the moist dough goes everywhere and requires patience not to scrub, which also removes the non-stick lining in the tray.
  • Do cook in a well-ventilated area – Place the gadget at least 4 inches from walls, and other small appliances to prevent overheating. Make sure the hot air from the vents doesn’t blow into the electrical outlets.
  • Don’t use accessories not made for your brand – Incorrect accessories can cause rusting and reduce efficiency.
  • Don’t place the machine on the stove – You may accidentally turn on your cooker and melt the air fryer.
